Wildcat varsity wins championship at La Pryor baseball tournament


The season’s first win for the Carrizo varsity baseball team came on Monday when the Wildcats defeated Poteet 8-6 to get the squad it’s first taste of victory. With the seasoning opening win secured for head baseball coach Johnny Estrada, the Wildcats headed to the La Pryor tournament and swept to four more wins in the tournament that included a trouncing of class 5-A Eagle Pass high school in the championship game.
    Carrizo did quick work of the Eagles in securing a 15-7 win in the title game and by tournaments end the Wildcats had the Most Valuable Player of the tourney in Beau Robinson along with Jonathan Lerma, Juan Lerma, Alonzo Mireles and J.P. Gonzalez selected to the All Tournament team.
    Monday’s season opening win over Poteet along with the four wins at the La Pryor tournament without a loss put the Wildcats early season record at 5-0, a record that gives Carrizo a full head of momentum heading into this week’s Popeye tournament in Crystal City.
    Opening round game for the Wildcats was against 29-AAA fellow member school Pearsall with Carrizo taking the game by a 8-7 score.
  Wildcats led 3-0 at the end of one and held a 4-1 lead at the end of two innings. Pearsall plated a single run in the third for a 4-2 score. In the top fourth Pearsall pushed across five runs to take a 7-4 lead but in the bottom half of the inning the Wildcats had three runs to tie the game at 7-7 at the end of four innings of play. Due to time limit and using an international tie breaker with a runner put on second to start the inning, Pearsall was held to zero runs while the Wildcats were able to score the runner in the bottom half of the tie breaker to win the game 8-7 over the Mavericks.
  Leading the Wildcats at the plate were Jonathan Lerma going 2-1 and Alonzo Mireles, going 2-2 against Maverick pitching.
  In the second game the Wildcats faced Eagle Pass Winn with pitcher J.P. Gonzalez recording seven strikeouts in a 16-0 win.
  Carrizo had eight runs in the first and added eight more runs in the third in the win over the Winn Mavericks.
  Nick Sifuentes went 3-2, Jonathan Lerma 3-2 and J. P. Gonzalez 3-2 at the plate in the win over Winn.
  Third game for the Wildcats had Carrizo taking a 6-3 win over Freer. The Wildcats led 3-1 heading into the fourth inning and added two more in the fourth extend the Carrizo lead to 5-1. A single run in the fifth by the Wildcats made it 6-1. Freer scored two runs in the sixth as the Wildcats defeated the Buckaroos by a 6-3 score and sending Carrizo to the championship game.
  Leading the Wildcats at the plate were Beau Robinson, going 3-3, and Juan Lerma, going 3-2 against Freer.
  Playing Eagle Pass high school in the championship game the Wildcats defeated the Eagles 15-7 to lay claim to the title of the La Pryor tournament.
  Carrizo scored in every inning against the Eagles, opening up with a 3-0 lead in the first. In the second the Eagles scored three runs while the Wildcats had two runs in the inning for a 6-2 Carrizo lead. Adding single runs in the third, fourth innings the Wildcat lead increased to 8-2 at the end of four innings. In the fifth the teams accounted for three runs each with Carrizo still on top 11-5 heading into the sixth. Carrizo put the game away with four runs while holding the Eagles to only a single run as the Wildcats won 15-7 over the Eagles.
  For the season the Wildcats have had strong pitching with J.P. Gonzalez winning two, Alonzo Mireles two games and Jonathan Lerma one win along with two saves.

Lady Wildcats reach bronze medal game
at Border Olympics

 
  Heading into the week’s Border Olympics in one South Texas’ toughest softball tournaments against top competition, head coach Mario Ruiz’ Lady Wildcat team more than held their own in reaching the Bronze Medal game of the tourney before losing a close 1-0 game to Eagle Pass C.C. Winn.
  Carrizo’s softball team won a pair of games, defeating Laredo Alexander and La Pryor. The losses for the Lady Wildcats were to Eagle Pass high school and Eagle Pass Winn.
  With sixteen teams playing in the tournament that included Carrizo, Crystal City, La Pryor, C.C. Winn, Cigarroa, Cotulla, Del Rio, Dilley, Eagle Pass high, Edinburg, LBJ, Laredo Martin, Rio Grande City, Roma, United and United South, the Lady Wildcats opened against Laredo Alexander.
  “Carrizo Springs bats got to Alexander pitching to bring in runs and Lady Wildcat pitching took care of the Bulldog batters”, said head baseball coach Mario Ruiz as Carrizo took care of Alexander 15-0 in the opening round game. “Defense played exceptionally well.”
  With the opening round game win behind them the Lady Wildcats moved to play class
5-A Eagle Pass.
  “We knew were going into a tough game against a 5-A talented team”, pointed coach Ruiz on the Lady Wildcats second round opponent.
  The Lady Wildcats played hard and kept the score low with Eagle Pass scoring their runs in the third and fourth inning while Carrizo tallied the three runs in the third. Eagle Pass went on win the game 8-2 over the Lady Wildcats.
  Playing La Pryor on Saturday the Lady Wildcats had scrimmaged the Lady Bulldogs two weeks ago. The Lady Wildcats played hard and had only a minimal amount of errors defensively. Carrizo defeated La Pryor 6-3 to head into the bronze medal game against Eagle Pass Winn.
  Against Winn a tremendous pitching performance by the teams left a scoreless dead lock after four innings of play.
  “C.C. Winn had a couple of hits at bat but could not convert them to runs and the Lady Wildcats did the same against the Lady Mavericks,” pointed out on the games four scoreless innings.
  With the game set to go into extra innings, the Lady Mavericks took advantage of a Carrizo error on a pop up fly ball to get a runner on base. The runner stole second and then scored the winning run for Winn on line drive base hit and the 1-0 win over Carrizo.
  “Coach Ward, Zamora and I have been very impressed with the Lady Wildcat’s play, enthusiasm, heart, desire and never giving up at the Border Olympics,” said coach Ruiz as the Lady Wildcats ended tournament play in Laredo with a 2-2 mark in tourney play.

Carrizo varsity softball team to play at Uvalde tourney

  The third and final softball tournament of the season for the Lady Wildcat varsity team will be at Uvalde with Carrizo schedule to attend on March 4th-6th.
  After playing a very competitive tournament in the Border Olympics in Laredo last week the Lady Wildcats look to continue that trend at the Uvalde tournament.
  Brackets and teams playing at the Uvalde tournament were not available.
  Lady Wildcats play at La Pryor on March 9th and at Uvalde on March 12th. District 29-AAA play starts on March 16th at home vs. Crystal City.

Regional powerlifting meet to be held in Carrizo

  A regional power lifting meet will be held in Carrizo Springs this week at the athletic field house on Friday and Saturday.
  Friday will have the weight in for members of schools participating in the regional meet. Competition gets underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Carrizo varsity baseball squad to play in Crystal City tourney

An season opening win over Poteet and a sweep of four wins at the La Pryor baseball tournament that included an impressive victory against 5-A baseball power Eagle Pass high school, the Wildcat varsity baseball team now sets it’s sights on the Popeye tournament that will be held on March 4-6 in Crystal City.

    Carrizo had a late game against on Tuesday but excluding that contest versus the Bulldogs, the Wildcats early season record stood at 5-0 with play at the Popeye tournament this week.
    Opening game for the Wildcats will be against D’Hanis on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. with the outcome of the game determining the time for the second round. Scheduled to play in the opening round of the tournament bracket include Pearsall vs. Freer and Bracketville vs. Dilley both at 10:00 a.m. Carrizo vs. D’Hanis and Cotulla vs. Crystal City both starting at 12:30 p.m.
    Consolation championship game is set for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and the tournament championship game is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Billies win over Carrizo in bi-district playoffs

Making the first playoff appearance in four years the Wildcat varsity basketball team lost it’s bi-district basketball state 3-A playoff game to Fredericksburg on Tuesday at  South San in San Antonio.
    The loss ended the Wildcats season after closing out the regular season with a win over Devine in district play that set up a game with Lytle to determine the third playoff representative from 29-AAA. Carrizo won against Lytle sending the Wildcats to the bi-district round against Fredericksburg.
    District 29-AAA other playoff representative on Tuesday had Crystal City winning it’s bi-district game against Wimberley. Hondo had a bye in the first round.
    In the second round Crystal City was outsted by Hidalgo Early College. Hondo won it’s second round game over Mathis. The Owls moved on to play in the third round with the Owls losing to West Oso late Monday.

Carrizo high school track and field at Dilley meet

  Due to Dilley not sending the final individual results from last Saturday’s track meet, the Carrizo Springs Javelin was not able to get the information for publication this week.
  According to head coaches Barry Brinkley and Lisa Haley the girls varsity and junior varsity divisions won first place in the final team standings. Carrizo varsity boys won the team title in the final team standing while the junior varsity boys placed second overall in the best track and field outing for the progams.
  The results from the Dilley meet will be in next week’s issue of the Javelin.
