Dr. Dorothy Mainland Brown

Dr. Dorothy Mainland Brown, 96, of Uvalde died Oct. 6, 2009, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Racine, Wis., on Sept. 7, 1913, to John and Kate Mainland, the third of five children.
She committed her life to Christ and to Christian service as a young girl growing up in La Porte, Ind.
She graduated from Wheaton College with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in 1935. She taught chemistry in Orlando, Fla., for one year before entering medical school at Indiana University where she graduated in 1943.
She did her internship in New York City from 1943-1946 at Bellevue, Memorial (now known as Sloan Kettering Hospital) and Queens General hospitals. Her focus of practice was general medicine including obstetrics and gynecology, tuberculosis control and public health. She hoped to become a medical missionary, but when that door closed she applied and was hired in 1946 to work in Crystal City at the Crystal Clinic and Hospital, which was also known as the Poindexter Hospital.
Her desire was to practice where there was a shortage of medical care. She made many house calls to deliver babies or administer to the sick as well as seeing patients at her home office anytime, day or night. She would provide the medicine for them if need be and accept whatever payment could be afforded. Often, that payment was nothing.
During her first years of practice she created a special professional relationship with Dr. George Papanicolaou from Cornell University Medical College who had developed the Pap smear for early gynecological pathology detection. She worked to bring that new technology to South Texas.
She held several offices on the Tri County Medial Society of Dimmit, Zavala and LaSalle counties, Dimmit County Hospital and Dimmit County Commissioners Court, and was chosen as Dimmit County’s Woman of the Year.
She also served as the public health officer of Dimmit and Zavala Counties during her active practice. She was introduced to her future husband through his sister Jeanne, a nurse for Dr. C.A. Poindexter.
he married Charles Leslie Brown on May 31, 1948, and moved to the Briscoe Catarina Ranch where she lived for over 40 years, raised four children and delivered seven of her 12 grandchildren.
According to her family she was a strong Christian woman who was a dedicated prayer warrior to the very end. She loved worshipping with her brothers and sisters in Christ.
Her hobbies and interests included archeology, especially hunting, identifying and dating arrowheads; and packing picnics in 15 minutes flat, sewing, painting, playing the piano and organ, genealogy, jogging the airstrip up until the age of 76, swimming laps, biking, baking bread and trying any recipe that sounded good whether she had the right ingredients or not and traveling the world. She was an incessant reader of anything that came across her path.
She was a writer, and authored her autobiography, “The Cowboy and the Unflappable Lady Doctor” and the history “The Saga of Catarina,” along with numerous genealogical works.
She had an avid interest in genealogy, spending many hours researching and compiling family histories back to the beginning of time, then copying them for every family member and making extra copies “just in case.”
According to her family, she possessed an overall ferocious curiosity about every aspect of life.
Brown was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers; and one sister.
She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Alexander and husband, Andy, Leslie K. Shaw and husband, John, and Mary Lynn Vaughn and husband, Randy, all of Uvalde; one son, Charles John Brown and wife, Debbie, of Catarina; one sister, Winifred Redfield of La Porte, Ind.; 12 grandchildren, Chad Alexander, Alyson Dubler, Brandon Alexander, Lyndzie Kolb, Theresa Shaw, Sandra Shaw, Les Shaw, Sally Vaughn, Brea Horton, Devon Fox, Lyssa Silos and Carson Brown; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
